Reclaimed Wood

Where does the wood come from?

Each of our wood products are individually sourced, with most of our wood originating from North America. Much of our reclaimed and salvaged wood comes from the West Coast, including redwood, orchard walnut and madrone, while other domestic hardwoods including reclaimed red and white oak is sourced from old barns, horse fencing and railroad dunnage in the eastern US. Our reclaimed teak is sourced from old buildings and pole houses in Southeast Asia. Each wood has its own, unique story. Read more about our where our wood comes from here.

What are the benefits of reclaimed wood?

Reclaimed wood has a truly unique character and aesthetic, and every piece tells its own rich, distinctive story. Whether you want to see the nail holes, oxide stains, saw trace marks or natural weathered patina, the embodied essence is there, ingrained within the wood. Oftentimes, reclaimed wood has better grain quality and stability than newly-harvested wood, as it has already undergone the natural aging and seasoning process over time. By surviving decades of use, reclaimed wood has proven it’s durability. Beyond performance, reclaimed wood is infused with history, with every plank a time capsule to another era.

Do you kiln dry your wood?

Yes, we kiln dry our reclaimed wood to ensure the proper moisture content and to eradicate any living insects, larvae and/or mold spores that could be present in the wood. Kiln drying helps improve the stability of the wood, preventing it from shrinking after installation.

Can I recieve LEED credits with reclaimed wood?

Yes! LEED projects offer credits for recycled and FSC certified materials, as well as local and/or regionally-sourced materials. Refer to our sustainability resources to learn more about using Anthology Woods products for your next LEED project.

Are your products FSC certified?

Our reclaimed products are FSC Recycled, while our Legacy White Oak is FSC Certified new wood, which means that it is harvested from responsibly-managed forests that take people, wildlife and the environment into consideration. Learn more about FSC standards here.

What is acclimation and why is it important?

Wood and water don’t mix! It’s important that your wood products are at a similar moisture content as the surrounding environment they will be installed in (this is known as Equilibrium Moisture Content). Acclimating will allow your new wood products to come into equilibrium with their new home! Consult with the appropriate Anthology Woods installation guidelines, the National Wood Flooring Association, Architectural Woodwork Standards (all found on our technical resources page), or your local contractor/installer for specific guidance on acclimating.

Do you install flooring?

How do I maintain and clean my wood floors?

With proper care, your wood floor will offer lasting beauty and performance. To maintain floors, use mats and rugs in higher traffic areas and entryways to protect wood floors (avoid rubber backs, they can discolor the floor) and sweep often to remove grit and dirt. Place felt pads under your furniture legs and avoid walking on wood floors with cleats or high heels, which have a high impact per square inch. Maintain humidity of your space between 30 and 50 percent RH to minimize cracks and gaps (some cracks and gaps are normal, but high variations in humidity can lead to bigger issues) and minimize exposure to direct sunlight to protect from color change.

Are wood floors good for higher traffic/heavy use applications?

Certain types of wood are better for high traffic environments than others, depending on their Janka hardness rating. Check out our flooring products to see which options we have available, and contact us directly to learn more about which wood is right for your flooring needs.
